100% Grolleau Noir. This is the first time the domaine has produced this wine. They acquired a new parcel of Grolleau grown on black schist, which was planted in 1936. Because the vines are old, they don't produce much fruit. And therefore, overall production is small, with only 60 bottles making it to Australia. Short carbonic maceration and then aged in tank for 6 months. Zero added SO2. Not fined or filtered.
Normally Grolleau can be quite earthy, but this is has pretty scents and is quite clean and and elegant. Lightish in colour, it displays notes of wild berries and dried wild flowers. To taste it is bright, with lifted notes of red berries and red apple. There is a vein of minerality which runs through it and gives you a sensation on the back palate, followed by nice rocky tension and gentle structure. Light and easy to drink and rather well designed. A cool light red with an even cooler label! Serve slightly chilled.
