2020 AOC Fleurie 'cayenne' (Magnum)

Julie Balagny

Regular price $180 1500ml Sale

Cayenne is made with grapes from Julie's younger vines in Fleurie. The vines are 35 and 40 years old. The soils are made up mainly of granite and basalt, with the remainder pink granite and quartz. The grapes are cooled for 24 hours and then undergo 5 weeks carbonic maceration, then raised in old barrels for 10 months. Not fined or filtered, and no added SO2 at any stage.

Dark colour. Clean nose, but tightly wound – like 2017 O Bella Ciao on release (which is now drinking beautifully). Deep, like a refined red wine jus. The floral notes are there, just hiding underneath the covers. Little violets with air. Will be interesting to see how this evolves. To taste it is full of flavour. Dark berries and cherry, with hints of cigar box and tamarind. Lots of matter in the texture – sure to fall away and reveal the roses as the years go by. Charred blueberries arrive later on. Layered and deep, with a wonderful texture. Drink slightly chilled.
